Citizenship in the Nation*

Citizenship in the Nation*

My keen interest in this topic results from having recently acquired US Citizenship after living here in the United States for 16 years. My two younger children were born in the United States and now hold dual Anglo-American citizenship and my older child holds Citizenship of three countries: the United States, France and the United Kingdom.

Prerequisites for this Activity

Citizenship in the Nation*

Introduction

As Scouts fulfill the requirements for this merit badge, they will learn how to; become active citizens, be aware of and grateful for their liberties and rights, to participate in their governments and protect their freedom, helping to defend their country and standing up for individual rights on behalf of all its citizens.

Pre-Requisites –        …“Be Prepared”

Please read the latest version of the Citizenship in the Nation merit badge book prior to the class. These books can be borrowed from your Troop Librarian, or ordered from The Atlanta Area Scout Shop, phone (770) 988-9912, or visit the Scout Shop at 1800 Circle 75 Parkway, Se, Atlanta, GA 30339. *NEW* - or buy and download an electronic copy of the pamphlet to your smartphone, tablet or laptop here.

Please print out a copy of the Citizenship in the Nation Workbook and bring a copy with you to the class. By using this Requirements Resources link (use only with your parent's permission) you will find additional information that will help you with your prerequisite tasks.

For this Merit Badge Class you will be required to work on several of the requirements before coming to the class.

Requirement # 8 … In order for you to have your Merit Badge signed off at the end of the class you must bring a copy of the letter you sent to either of your State Senators, or your congressional district’s Congressman. Please work on this prerequisite FIRST so there is a better chance of your receiving a reply before coming to class.

Requirement # 2 … In order for you to have your Merit Badge signed off at the end of the class you must have completed two of the four available options. NOTES: Georgia has 48 National Historic Landmarks with 8 in Atlanta, and many more locations on the National Register of Historic Places, the closest Historic Site to our Troop being Kennesaw Mountain National Battlefield. The Georgia State Capitol offers Self-Guided and Scheduled tours 8am to 5pm Monday thru Friday, Sept - Dec 2011.

Requirement # 3 … In order for you to have your Merit Badge signed off at the end of the class you must bring to class a written [or printed], one page table listing the issues of ‘National’ importance that you saw [on TV news channel] or read [in a major daily newspaper] over the five consecutive days.  Don’t forget to pick one of these issues and make notes in your Workbook about how it affects you and your family.

Requirement # 6 … In order for you to have your Merit Badge signed off at the end of the class you must have chosen a speech of National importance, and completed the instructions for requirement 6 in your Workbook before you come to class.  Be prepared to discuss your speech with your Counselor in class.

Time permitting, we will also be taking an online team quiz during the class.  The questions to be answered during the quiz will be sent out to you in your Citizenship in the Nation merit badge class welcome email. Researching the answers before coming to class is highly recommended.
